“What the fuck was that, Sam?” I snap.

He folds his arms across his chest. “Now I wasn’t nice enough to your beloved assistant? What the fuck do you even want from me?”

“I don’t know, okay? I don’t know what I want from you because I don’t get you. Risking your life for everyone. Smiling and playing nice with everyone. Then picking fights with me at every chance you get.”

He looks offended. “I do not pick fights with you. You just… just…”

“I just what?”

“Annoy me. Mess with my head. Make my system glitch. I don’t know, Adrian. Good thing it wouldn’t even matter after tomorrow.” He turns to walk away.

“So that’s it, huh? Your work is done, and now I’m two-day-old garbage?”

He turns slowly and snorts. “Isn’t that what you wanted?”

I did. That’s exactly what I wanted. Then why does it feel like he’s ripping my heart out and stomping all over it? I blow out a breath. This is so like him. Doing whatever the fuck he wants without any care in the world.

“You’re right. That’s exactly what I wanted.” I nod. “So now you get to jump into more fires, hurting everyone who cares about you. You think that’ll bring her back? You think that would make your parents happy?”

The change in Sam is instant. His smirk drops, his face falling. His breathing goes heavy, eyes turning vicious. “You don’t know what you’re talking about,” he grinds out.

“Oh, but I do, Sam. You wanted to wipe the slate clean and forget everything before it all went to shit, so I played along. But it happened. You trusted me then. You trusted me enough to call for help when I was the one hurting your friends. You trusted me to tell me about your parents. So I do know what I’m talking about.”

“You know what, I don’t have to take this.” He turns to leave again.

I pull him back in. “We’re not done talking yet.” My arms wrap around his waist as he crashes against my chest.
