Excerpt:

I’ve made some questionable decisions in life—like that time I bought six-inch heels to reclaim my edge after my divorce. Mistake. Worse than those heels? Borrowing money from a demon named Paul. That one haunted me. Literally.

Okay, okay, Paul Duvall was technically only a demon on his dad’s side. Still, taking money from a half-demon hadn’t been my proudest moment. But I had no choice. When that judge threatened to take my daughter unless I proved I could support her, I took the money. Yes, I knew regret would come, but I didn’t think it would hit so hard and fast.

Gianna Romano, best friend, business partner, and the Abbott to my Costello, paced across the receptionist’s area. She’d been antsy since she saw Paul’s note promising he’d stop by.

“All I’m saying is we can run,” Gianna said. “I can have Mia packed and ready in twenty minutes. Maybe less.”

“Thanks, but no.”

“Are you sure? Because I’d rather start over than have you lose your soul.”

“I’m not going to lose my soul.” Probably. Besides, I’d run from my problems once before. Spoiler alert, it did not end well. Anyway, where could I run? Paul had relatives in really low places. If we left, he’d find us.

“He’s late,” Gianna said.

From my seat in one of the waiting room chairs, I checked the clock. “When is he ever on time?”

She pursed her lips. “You’d think someone with his connections could, I don’t know, summon an Uber?”

Before I responded, the bell over the door jingled, and—speak of the devil (or, well, his descendant)—Paul Duvall strolled in like he owned the place. Which, considering my financial situation, was a possibility.

BLURB:

Forty-year-old Bella Hexley walked away from magic years ago. She built a perfectly ordinary life—law school, marriage, motherhood. But then her husband blindsides her with divorce and takes their house, their savings, and every illusion of stability she had left. The only thing she got to keep? Custody of her daughter—if she can prove she can support her.

With no job offers and bills piling up, Bella does the unthinkable: she returns to the one place she swore she’d never set foot in again—the Enchanted District of Chicago.

Broke and out of options, she borrows money from a half-demon named Paul, and uses it to open a magical law firm. But the clients don’t come, the money runs out, and when Bella misses a payment, Paul calls in a favor—she has to take on a case of his choosing: sue a grim reaper for wrongful death.

Suing a grim reaper for death is a little like suing a surgeon for using a scalpel, and that's not the only problem with the case. The reaper might actually be innocent. And worse—Bella can't stop thinking about him.

Between a missing diary, a client with way too many secrets, and a creeping suspicion she’s being played, Bella’s balancing legal ethics and rusty magic skills. Her ghostly roommate offers legal tips in a British accent and reluctantly babysits, her best friend believes lasagna can solve most major crises, and her new familiar has a tendency to catch things on fire.

The Hex Files is a cozy urban fantasy series with a strong romantic element. Book 2, The Hexorcism of Cassie Kovar releases on November 11th. There will be 3 books in the series.
