“Why is that so, Lord Michael? Why must women, ladies, be kept so in the dark? If someone turned on the light, would we all rebel?”

 

Here he was, confronted with a question that facts and figures would not help, so of course his stupid brain resorted to the easiest, most condescending response.

 

“Why, only a woman would ask such a thing.”

 

While nothing in her face changed, he saw something like disappointment grace her eyes, and something more, finality. She had judged him and found him lacking, tested him and he had failed.

 

“Lord Michael,” She began very slowly, as if talking to a small child. But her tone did not bear an air of superiority, it merely seemed that she wanted to get her point across. “Imagine a bird in a cage, its wings unclipped. It cannot see all the other wires entwined to keep it in the cage, thus it accepts these wires around it. If the bird flew around the entire cage, from its limited point, it would always likely not be able to see it was trapped or in a cage at all. But to some extent, this bird had freedom and believed all other birds had the same freedom. But imagine another bird perched in the middle of the cage. This was the only place this bird could ever sit, on a pedestal, wings clipped. This bird understood not only why they could not fly away, but that they were both in a cage together.”

 

“What ought the birds to do then?” He felt like she was trying to tell him something important, but for some reason, he couldn’t conceive what she was trying to say.

 

“Why isn’t the answer obvious?” She smiled again.
